Andersonville Cemetery & Prison, Georgia

This Cemetery is located about half a mile northeast of the Railroad Depot, at Andersonville, (formerly Anderson), Georgia, a station on the Southwestern Georgia Railroad, sixty miles from Macon, and near by the Prison Pen or stockade that was erected by the Rebel authorities, for the reception and confinement of soldiers of the Union Army, who had been captured and were held as Prisoners of War.
The original number of interments in this Cemetery (12,912), has been increased by the removal of the dead which has been collected and interred in the Public Cemetery, at Montgomery, Alabama, and a of a large number of Prisoner of Was who had been buried at Macon, Columbus, Thomasville and Albany, Georgia, from the battlefields of Griswoldville and Sunshine, and the scattered dead on the route of General Sherman, to Savannah, south of the Georgia Central Railroad.
